When You're Feeling Spiritually BlahSýnishorn
Key #1 – Just Do It
Most of us don’t want to admit when we feel spiritually blah. We know that’s carnal and un-Christian, and not a good witness. We know that Jesus gave His life for us, and we should always feel close to Him, ready to set the world on fire, right?
I’m going to be honest – some days, I don’t feel like setting the world on fire. I feel like climbing back in bed and pulling up the covers. I know I’m not supposed to walk by my feelings – 2 Corinthians 5:7 clearly says we’re to walk by faith, not by sight (or feelings), but some days, those feeling are there! What should I do about them?
Thankfully, I’ve learned a few things about what to do when I feel this way.
Key #1 – Read the Bible. I know you know this. I do too, but how many times do we let it slip? Knowing some scriptures and reading them before doesn’t mean we’re letting the Word dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16).
Faith is where our victories come from. First John 5:4 says this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith, and Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. So if I want to overcome “blah” feelings and walk in victory, faith is how I’m going to do it, and the Bible is where I’m going to get that faith.
The Bible is our guide for life – it’s our answer book! Every day we go without reading is a day we’re trying to live life in our own strength, and it’s just too hard for us. It’s God’s Word – it’s Him talking to us. We need that every day, don’t we? Yesterday’s faith is not good enough for today’s challenges.
We don’t read the Bible to “qualify” for God’s blessings – those are already ours in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3). We read it, so we’ll know what belongs to us, and we’ll keep believing our covenant when our feelings don’t match up.
Don’t feel guilty about bad Bible-reading habits – change them. Today. Read your Bible. It will put you over. Just do it.
