At first glance, this passage might seem random, but it is, in fact, Paul’s concluding remarks on his reasons for writing this letter. These verses summarize what Paul has been teaching from Chapter 2:14. Paul wrote about everyone’s need to be reconciled to God through salvation in Christ. Paul now instructs the church about their need to be reconciled to God and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul had given the Corinthian church a measure of grace for their behaviors, but in this week’s passage, he concludes his message by speaking to them as a spiritual father.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
