Daily Bible Reading, July 2022: God’s Renewing Word of FaithSýnishorn
July 28
Introduction
In yesterday’s reading, Jephthah had made a promise to the LORD if the LORD gave him the victory (11:30, 31) – a promise that has heartbreaking consequences. The reading concludes with a description of an annual ritual initiated by the women of Israel.
Scripture Reading
Judges 11:34-40
Today’s Key Verse: Judges 11:35b
[Jephthah said:] “I have made a solemn promise to the LORD, and I cannot take it back.”
Reflect
Recall the promise Jephthah had made (verses 30, 31). Does his promise indicate that he lacks trust in God who has filled Jephthah with his Spirit? Why or why not? Human sacrifice was not considered acceptable (Leviticus 18:21); yet a promise, once made, was irrevocable (Numbers 30:2; Deuteronomy 23:21-23). How does Jephthah’s daughter respond when she learns of her father’s promise? What are your thoughts regarding Jephthah’s promise? What annual ritual did the death of Jephthah’s daughter initiate? Does your community of faith observe any rituals to remember the lives of those who have died?
Pray
God of mercy and love, help me to discern your will for me each day. Teach me to place my trust in you and to be guided by your truth. In your holy name I pray. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Judges 13:1-25: Samson is born.
