Rest Assured

DAY 1 OF 3

Rest Assured: Sleep

Sleep is mentioned 170 times in the Bible. 170!! Many of these passages also include the words “deep sleep.” How many individuals reading this devotional today could use a “deep sleep?"

Did you know that sleep is a gift that God gives to us? For one of the 170 references, I’m going to share Psalm 127:2, which says, “For he gives to his beloved sleep.” In context, it’s essential to know that unless the Lord “builds a house,” those who labor in it do it in vain. I believe that if everyone would read this chapter and meditate on it, this right here would solve many “sleep” and “rest” concerns. Have you ever been in a situation where nothing seems to be going according to plan? It might be time to pray, “Lord, am I laboring in vain?”

After many years in practice, I have seen the effects of what laboring and not having enough rest can do to your body (regardless if someone is a Christian or not). One of my first recommendations to everyone is to be in bed by 10 p.m., shut off all electronics, and cover all the lights in your room. I suggest this time because your body makes growth hormone vital for your adrenal glands during the hours between 10 p.m. and midnight. I also recommend going to bed at a decent hour because I like to live out Psalm 63, especially in the KJV and NKJV, where it says “early will I rise” and seek You. It’s essential to wake up rested, thank God for the new day, and ask for His strength for what the day has in store.

As we end today’s reading, I want you to ask yourself one question, as I briefly stated above:

Am I laboring in something God does not want me to do?

He wants to give us rest and peaceful sleep; let’s seek Him to know we’re on the right path today!
