Make A Difference

DAY 2 OF 4

Be a leader

When people give some thought to leadership in the church, the first role to pop into their heads is probably that of pastor. Of course. Churches desperately need strong pastors who can speak the Word of God clearly, teach and counsel with love and care, recruit and manage volunteers, and inspire a culture of outreach.

But the church needs strong lay leaders just as much. Any healthy business needs a good balance between governance and management, and the church does too. Lay leaders evaluate the work of the pastoral staff; help set the mission, vision, and agenda; oversee the finances; own and manage the property; and approve the program of work. Lay leaders watch over the interests of the members of the congregation--after all, it’s their church, not the pastor’s church.

Has God given you the gifts for leadership? “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is . . . to encourage, then give encouragement... If it is to lead, do it diligently” (Romans 12:6,8). Leaders release energy in others, set the bar with personal buy-in and generosity, bring new workers onto the team, and know how to say thank you.

Don’t be afraid to get involved. Choose a mentor and ask for advice to navigate the organization. Put up your hand and volunteer. Step up. Reach up. Serve like a leader and lead like a servant.

Make a difference. Be a leader.
