Getting to Know the Prophets

DAY 22 OF 30

Ezekiel

Ezekiel is one of the five Major Prophets and one of two who prophesied during the exilic time period (c. 597 BC). His name means "God strengthens.” Ezekiel received a vision in the middle of the night when he was 30 years old (according to Numbers 4:3, priests normally began their service during the 30th year). This vision resembled the glory of the Lord. The Babylonian Empire at that time overtook the Kingdom of Judah, and they carried away captives three times. Ezekiel was taken captive in the second phase (2 Kings 24:12–16, conquest that led to his captivity).

Ezekiel’s message called out the Israelites because of their selfish wish to escape the judgment the Babylonians would bring. More importantly, though, it gave God’s people hope instead of false prophecies with empty hope. The fire that engulfed itself was a reminder with a direct correlation to God’s presence. God is with us. Even in the midst of captivity and all the things God's people experienced during that time, it was the knowledge and presence of God that kept Ezekiel going: God's holiness, glory, and sovereignty.

1. Is there a time in your life when you doubted God was holy, glorious, and sovereign? Write it down; journal about it.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are holy, glorious, and sovereign. I pray You would remind me on my darkest days – and my best days – that You are with me and that who You are never changed.
