Expect the Unexpected

DAY 3 OF 5

The miracle of Jesus’ feeding the 5,000 with just two fish and five loaves of bread is recorded in all four of the gospels. Each gospel makes us keenly aware that Jesus and the disciples hadn’t packed food to feed the multitude. Nevertheless, Christ had the people sit and prepare for the UNEXPECTED. And the UNEXPECTED happened.

In fact, John’s recount makes sure that we are aware that there were even leftovers: “So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten … ." John is also the only gospel that informs us where the food came from. “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?" Who looks to a boy to meet the needs of the multitude? GOD! Who expects two small fish and five small loaves to feed thousands? GOD!

There are needs that must be met on this Earth and He will use those who are completely UNEXPECTED to meet the needs of the moment (even with limited resources) so He can be glorified. There was no mistaking who fed the multitude that day! Don’t let your present circumstances or seemingly inadequate resources stop you from being available for God’s use in blessings others. As Mary said to the servants at the wedding at Cana where Jesus performed another unexpected miracle, I say to you be ready to “Do whatever he tells you,” (John 2:5).
