His Cross Our HopeSýnishorn
Frightening possibilities trouble my heart. What if my husband has a heart attack? That’s how his dad died. Knowing my good friend is dealing with a cancer diagnosis weighs heavy on me. After 2 minutes on social media this morning, I was exposed to ten different upsetting news headlines. Fear of sickness surrounds me and threatens my serenity.
Before Jesus returned to His Father, knowing how hard this would be for His followers, He told them not to be afraid. Fierce opposition was ahead. Soon they would all be running in panic as He was arrested and brought to trial. Therefore, He reassured them they would not be alone and promised to send the Holy Spirit as their comforter, advocate, and constant companion.
Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, Jesus gives us peace that isn’t dependent on our financial security, health, or other conditions out of our control. Rather, He promised an assurance that would comfort our hearts in any situation.
When someone believes in Jesus Christ, they receive His indwelling, peace-giving Spirit. We access that serenity by relying on Him, prayerfully bringing Him our concerns, and trusting Him with the outcome.
This enables me to give my family to God knowing He’ll take care of them. When frightening news comes, I place my faith in my Father who has already won the victory over sin and death. This isn’t something I do once. I must continually give Him my fears. The assaults on my tranquility will continue to come but I keep contentment by holding on to Jesus.
What troubles your heart today?
Give everything to Jesus and receive His joy.
