Manna From Heaven: 5 Days of Nourishment for the Soul

DAY 1 OF 5

Manna from Heaven

If you’ve ever experienced seasons of financial difficulty where it was a struggle to simply put food on the table, imagine how Moses must have felt after he and his fellow Israelites fled Egypt and now found themselves in the wilderness.

We know there were about 600,000 men not counting the women and children (Exodus 12:37). A very conservative estimate could easily be over 2 million mouths to feed! And it didn’t take long for Moses to begin hearing groans from both bellies and mouths. Talk about a stressful situation!

Thankfully, Moses wouldn’t need to “whip anything up” for a dinner party of over 2 million. Instead, the same God who miraculously delivered His people from the clutches of Pharaoh, would now supernaturally provide food from the very storehouses of heaven.

“The Israelites called the food manna. It was white like coriander seed, and it tasted like honey wafers.” (Exodus 16:31 NLT)

The Hebrew word for manna literally means, “What is it?”

What would start off as a fresh dew would evaporate and turn into “a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketing the ground.” (16:14)

And there you have it! The first documented instance of people having Mountain Dew and Frosted Flakes for breakfast. Just kidding of course :-)

God would provide this heavenly food day in and day out for forty years! (16:35)

The Psalmist puts it this way as he recalls this incredible period in Israel’s history,

“He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them bread from heaven. They ate the food of angels! God gave them all they could hold.” (Psalm 78:24-25)

Over the course of these next 5 days, it’s my hope that God would supply spiritual manna from heaven for our souls. Each day is meant to provide some nourishment from the endless feast that is God’s Word.

These days might also feel like little appetizers that whet your appetite to dig into the Bible even more. Most of all, I pray that we would encounter the true Manna from heaven found in Christ,

“Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

With open hands and humble hearts, we pray, “Father, give us today our daily bread.”

Reflection: In what ways do you experience God's daily provision of manna?
