Today's Bible reference from the book of John is clear. It's direct. It's simple. I don't know about you, but I often miss the power in the simple. So today, let's slow down and focus on the simple truths that we have learned so far.
In John 14, Jesus is telling his disciples not to let their hearts be troubled; he will be going ahead to prepare a place for them. Thomas, like many of us, asks Jesus for more details.
Thomas says, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
Jesus answers, "I am the one way." (*paraphrased, of course!)
Jesus' mission was to become the one way to connect us - without barriers - to God's love and presence. His mission was simple and focused.
But the journey behind that one mission was complex and complicated, connected with drama from Jesus' friends, followers, skeptics, world leaders, and enemies. There were twists and turns, times of hope and discouragement, but Jesus' mission never changed.
Jesus' mission reminds me that the how is much less important than we often think. The how of the mission was difficult and painful. The how often changed course.
But the Who never changed. The Who remained focused and confident. Jesus proved Himself faithful and true as He faced every challenge and choice throughout His journey.
So today, if you are still seeking clarity or focus in your journey, be confident in the One Who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Let's now turn that interaction between Thomas and Jesus more personally. Let Jesus' answer to Thomas speak directly to your needs and situations today.
I say, "Lord, I don't know where you are going, so how can I know the way?"
Jesus answers, "I am the one way."
Prayer:
Father, I sometimes too easily understand Thomas's frustration; sometimes I don't know where You are going and can be distracted by competing voices and noise. Today, as I ask for renewed clarity and focus on my journey, I remember that all it takes is one moment and one word from You to skillfully and lovingly guide my path. As I continue moving ahead, I have confidence that You are Who You say You are and that you are still my One Maker. I praise You and thank You for what You have done for me. May my life serve to lift You higher than the noise around me, and may others witness your love and faithfulness in my journey. I chase after You first, because You are the One way.
