Refuel, Reframe, Recalibrate: A 7-Day Devotional for Business ExecutivesSýnishorn
Following His Voice
The boardroom is not typically thought of as the place for divine guidance. Corporate decisions are traditionally made based on facts, research, statistics, and analyses, not 'Thus saith the Lord." Yet, as sons and daughters of God, we are supposed to be led by the Holy Spirit. So how do we bridge these two worlds as Kingdom executives?
Well, first of all, it is good to underscore that God is not against facts and figures. Biblical characters Daniel and Joseph are powerful examples of believers who excelled in the secular knowledge of their time and managed the affairs of the world with superior business acumen. However, they also modeled lives that were devoted to God above all else and guided by His voice.
A useful perspective to employ when analyzing how Daniel and Joseph straddled the Babylonian and heavenly realms so effectively is this:
- Listen: They listened well to the perspectives of the people they served. They understood the dynamics at play in the palace (office). They knew who had the power to do what and, therefore, who to approach for information and assistance. They were also attentive to the dreams of their leaders.
- Pray: Having well understood the situation on the ground, they were able to go before God with the right questions and requests, and make the right decrees in the spirit realm. Their effectiveness in prayer was due in large part to the clarity they had of the situation in the "marketplace" and their role in it. Most importantly, these men of God practiced two-way prayer. They heard the voice of God. They came out of the prayer closet armed with wisdom from heaven to solve the problems facing their "organization!"
- Implement: Next they took the wisdom from heaven and, using their business/technical expertise, were able to offer practical solutions that prospered those whom they served and brought glory to God. They were truly solutions-oriented.
Creator of Heaven and Earth, You hold the wisdom of the ages! As I traverse the corporate spheres that you have allotted to me, give me discernment to grasp the complex problems that I will face daily. Reveal to me the forces behind the facts and figures, and give me insight into the dreams, plans, and desires of men. Give me a keen ear, I pray, to hear Your voice and a heart to obey. Finally, God, let a spirit of excellence and divine creativity be upon me to implement earthly solutions that glorify Your name. Amen.
