Mary, Did You Know?

DAY 2 OF 13

Mary believed and accepted God’s word

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

The Gospel of Luke records how God sent the angel Gabriel to the city of Nazareth. He was to announce the birth of the long-awaited Messiah, “the Son of the Most High”, who would reign on David’s throne forever.

Mary knew that the Messiah would come one day. But the news that she would become His mother, was totally unexpected. She did not understand how this could be, since she was a virgin. But when the angel explained to her that “the power of the Most High” would make her pregnant, she accepted this news in faith.

This announcement would turn her life upside down. Getting pregnant before being married would ruin her reputation. Maybe her husband-to-be would leave her. Mary had no idea what it would imply to be the mother of “the Son of God”. But she was ready to play her part in God’s amazing plans. She said: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

Mary is an inspiring example of faith in God’s Word and of submission to His guidance. If you were in Mary’s position, how would you respond?
