Growing As A MentorSýnishorn
“Inspiring Change”
Mentor’s Perspective:
As a mentor, one of the things we get to do is inspire the mentee towards change. A lot of people hate change, but with the right person beside them they can change habits, lifestyles, and behaviors. As a mentor, God will use you to bring awareness to areas that need changed areas that don’t line up with God’s truth or areas that are completely missing all together.
This can be intimidating, but it’s an important part of mentoring. Everyone is better off when someone they trust is asking them the hard questions, pointing out truth and pushing them towards greatness. As you are walking with them through a time of change, remember that God will be the one to change them, and it won’t be overnight. Sometimes you want it for them so badly that you get frustrated when they don’t change right away.
You have to be patient and let the mentee take ownership and responsibility for the process of change themselves. You can help guide them, but you can’t change for them. You and your mentee may get frustrated at times, but the life change that happens in the end will be worth it!
Mentee’s Perspective:
In order for us to grow, we need someone who sees us as we are, loves us anyway, and sees what we could be.
The Lord has created us for two things – a relationship with Him and then a relationship with people. Since none of us are perfect, more than likely we may be struggling in one, or both, of those important relationships. A lot of times, we may be insecure in ourselves. Help us discover what areas we need to grow in, and challenge us with next steps. We may already know what we need to do, but we just might need a little nudge or accountability to get moving. If we’re wanting to grow at all, we’ll try what you say, even if we don’t like it at first. Why? Because you’re our mentor! We trust you and know that you’re seeking God about these things. We’ll especially know that if we are seeking God about them too.
