God is our CHRO at Work Sýnishorn
God directs our careers if we allow Him to
God is the ultimate CHRO! He alone sees the entire picture. He perceives all the needs and opportunities across the earth and moves His people, as they yield to Him, to the right places. Nobody has a broader view than He. God knows us deeply and personally. He understands what makes for the best fit for us. If we let Him, He will direct our lives, including our career path - assigning us to the jobs, cities, countries and organizations where we can flourish and help others to thrive.
Our heavenly Father is never-changing. He continues to position us in the marketplace according to His plans, just like how He led Abraham, Boaz and Daniel to impact their places of work. Boaz, a landowner in Judea, designed his business to follow God’s precepts; grain that fell to the ground during reaping was available for the poor, the orphans, the widows and the foreigners (Leviticus 19:9-10). Ruth benefitted from this as she gleaned after Boaz’s reapers (Ruth 2:7). In doing so, Boaz allowed God to direct his business choices, sharing his abundance with the underprivileged rather than maximizing his profits.
Some may ask, “What if I miss God’s will?” The next question is, “Do you love God and desire to follow His will?”. If yes, He will not let you depart from His will. If you stray, He will draw you, nudge you, create roadblocks to cause you to return to the path He intends for you. He does this because He is faithful! Even the prodigal son who had no love for his father eventually came to his senses and returned to his father’s house. We can rest assured that God, being gentle and kind, will draw us to His purposes if this is our desire. Even for those who made missteps in the marketplace, God who is all-powerful can use our mistakes for His purposes.
We are His vessels, jars of clay, filled with His treasure (2 Corinthians 4:7-9). God sent us to companies that need our expertise, God-given insights, and His light. Often, we presume that we landed a job because of our qualifications, talents, experience or connections. While these are certainly helpful to get one foot through the door, let us grasp that God sovereignly positions us in an industry or company for reasons bigger than ourselves.
Questions for reflection:
1. Do you see God as the CHRO of your career choices and moves? Why do you think God has placed you in your current industry or company?
2. Have you made mistakes in your career that you felt caused you to drift away from God’s will?
May you experience freedom today to invite the Lord to realign your career path to His will.
About this Plan
Every company has a Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) or an equivalent, overseeing all aspects of people management. Naturally, employees look to the HR on career matters. Believers, however, can confidently look to God as our ultimate CHRO. For only He has the holistic, long-term view, placing us at the right place, at the right time, to meet the right persons for very specific kingdom purposes.
