Elijah. Man of Courage, Man of Faith, Man of God.

DAY 7 OF 22

Who is the real God?

Not only king Ahab and queen Jezebel serve idols, “all the people of Israel” are lurching between two different opinions. They halfheartedly believe that the Lord is God, but they also serve Baal. This has to stop. Elijah can’t convince the people, but he invites them to watch for themselves. Who is the real God?

At Mount Carmel, two groups of prophets gather. On the one side is Elijah. He is the only one who openly stands up for the Lord. On the other side are 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. Both sides will ask their god to provide fire for a sacrifice: “you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God”. The people agree with this proposal. The prophets of Baal call upon their god, they dance around the altar, they cut themselves with swords, but nothing happens. Then Elijah earnestly prays to God, and… “the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.” This settles the dispute. The people are convinced that the Lord is God.

Are you also convinced?

About this Plan

Elijah. Man of Courage, Man of Faith, Man of God.

The Bible is full of stories about people who try to live to God's glory - with ups and downs. Elijah is such a man. He is a prophet who serves God wholeheartedly, but is also prone to despondency and depression. He confronts the king fearlessly, but flees from the queen. And in all this, God continues to care for His servant.
