Absolute Power

DAY 9 OF 10

The Power To Witness

The Holy Spirit empowers you to be a witness for Jesus Christ.

The power of the Holy Spirit to witness is not to testify about your denomination, your church, your dreams, or your visions. No, it is given to bear witness about the goodness, the mercy, and the grace of God received at the moment of your salvation.

The Holy Spirit experience in Acts 2 was God’s FedEx to the Church that Jesus had arrived in heaven. When the disciples were gathered in the Upper Room, God the Father sent the Holy Spirit and cloven tongues of fire sat upon the heads of 120 believers who were imbued with the supernatural power to witness for Christ.

There was no television, radio, or Gutenberg Press to reach all of these nations. But because they were all gathered in one place, in the Upper Room, there was a supernatural anointing on these people. These 120 people left the Upper Room and went into the streets and spoke in the native tongue of the visitors in the city of Jerusalem, who were then evangelized to recognize Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

Think about that kind of power. This was the first official evangelism explosion in the New Testament. This was an evangelism explosion par excellence; beyond anything anyone could possibly imagine. Because of that evangelism explosion, 3,000 people got saved in one day.

Some people believe that the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 was the first Day of Pentecost. Not true! The Jewish people had been celebrating the Day of Pentecost from Mount Sinai, 1,500 years before Acts 2 was ever written. God told Moses to bring the children of Israel from Egypt’s bondage to the Promised Land to come to this mountain. Here Moses spoke with God face-to-face as tongues of fire covered the mountain.

Why was it called Pentecost? Pentecost is from the Greek word pentekostos, which means “fifty.” It was a fifty-day journey from the Red Sea where God miraculously delivered them from the bondage of Pharaoh and Egypt to Mount Sinai. It was here the nation of Israel was born.

Fifteen hundred years later, in the Upper Room in Jerusalem, cloven tongues of fire sat upon the head of every believer in a national prayer meeting and the New Testament Church was born. The Day of Pentecost is the birthday of the New Testament Church.
