Who Is Jesus? Part 4Sýnishorn
What Will You Say?
Okay, two crazy, life-changing things happen in the final chapter of Matthew’s Gospel account. So get ready, because we are going out with a bang!
First off, the tomb is empty! On Friday Jesus was crucified as a criminal and on Sunday He was resurrected as our King, making Jesus the only person in all of human history to predict His own death and resurrection and actually pull it off. This changes everything! He didn’t just say He was going to give His life to rescue humanity from sin and then rob death of its power through His resurrection … He actually did it.
Now, after making several appearances to His followers in the days following the resurrection, we find Jesus and the disciples gathered on a mountain. Jesus is about to send them, to send us, into the world to continue what He started. To proclaim this incredible news that through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, our God has once again become King, His Kingdom is coming on earth as it is in heaven, and we are all invited to be part of it.
Side note: Verse 17 tells us that there were people standing on that mountain, face to face with a man who had come back from the dead, and still, some doubted. But guess what? Right after Matthew tells us this, Jesus issues the Great Commission, the marching orders for His followers. Even to the ones who doubted. It wasn’t like, wait God, pause the ascension. I need to get these jokers out of here first. Because with Jesus, doubts don't disqualify you. You are still invited to partner with Him in the mission of bringing heaven to earth. Even when you have questions, concerns, and doubts.
So here’s the mission:
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NIV
Who is Jesus? Jesus is our risen King, He’s the one who holds all the authority, He’s the Son of Man, our perfect guide—literally the visible image of our invisible God! He’s the Messiah, Son of David. A second and better Moses. And He’s still “God with us.” From page one of this book Jesus has been Immanuel, God with us, and on the final page, in the final verse, that’s still exactly who Jesus is.
What does that mean for you and me? It means we are invited to be partners with the King of the universe. We get to bear His image and further His mission in all the world. We are His chosen ambassadors. His disciples, His followers. Throughout this book, we have come to know and understand so much of who Jesus is. And what we see in His final words is that those who know Jesus share this incredible mission of making Him known.
So what will you say when someone asks you the ultimate question: Who is Jesus?
