DAY 2 OF 5

Devotional:

Jesus Empathizes With You

In yesterday’s reading, Jesus declared his powerful mission of restoration. In today’s reading (though it was the same day, same place, and same people as yesterday’s reading), Jesus’ own community (family, neighbors, church peers, etc) were not only unimpressed - they were downright hostile. Their comments are full of doubt at Jesus’ capability to help -  let alone do anything miraculous. Then, they physically attacked him.

The passage doesn’t say what Jesus’ tone was when he responded to them. It could have been anger, sadness, or even fear.

Picture yourself in that scene. What would you have felt? Now picture a moment when you excitedly shared with others the mission God asked you to follow him on. Picture your audience of family members, friends, neighbors, and people you go to church with. When they respond with doubt at your capability to do what God asked of you, what do you feel?

Have you ever felt rejected? Have you felt small or helpless when you were trying to help? Have you felt looked down on because of decisions you made in the past? Have you ever felt strained because you didn’t have sufficient resources?

Jesus has been where you are. He has been full of purpose and care for hurting people, and he has experienced rejection by his closest community. You are not alone. Experiencing rejection does not mean you are a failure and unable to serve. He is with you and understands what you feel.

Today’s Challenge:

In Hebrews 4:15, Jesus is described as an intercessor who can empathize with you. Take advantage of sharing with him what you feel about any hurts you have experienced.

Journal some memories of experiences of rejection you have had. Be honest. Jesus understands the pain of leadership. Ask him to help carry the load with you.
