Walking in the Spirit – a Practical Guide

DAY 4 OF 5

Lesson #3 – Let The Wave Do The Work!

Once we've caught the wave, we can stand up and enjoy the ride! A wave carries a massive amount of energy that is unleashed as it reaches shallow water. Surfers harness that raw power to go at phenomenal speeds down the face of the waves with little effort.

That’s the life in the Spirit! The power of God is at work in us when we are walking in the Spirit, and what God can do FAR outmatches what we could do on our own (no matter how self-disciplined we may be). The Holy Spirit leads the work of crucifying the flesh (or sanctification). As we spend consistent time with God, the Spirit will highlight areas in our hearts and minds that need to change. Maybe we need to love our spouse better or stop watching as much TV or maybe we need to believe what God says about us and get rid of a negative self-image. As we surrender these areas to Christ and obey as the Spirit leads, we will see amazing transformations in our lives.

Now is when we begin to partner with the Spirit in real-time. As we face the temptation to fall into old habits throughout the day, call on the Spirit! In the moment of weakness, Jesus fights on our behalf! If we are to live transformed lives, we must live empowered by the Spirit 24/7. We can’t relegate God to only our church time or our prayer time. He is always with us, eager to empower us to live to our full potential in Christ in every moment!

We have to stay on the wave! While riding a wave, the surfer is constantly making tiny adjustments in response to the wave. Shifting his body weight to ensure that he stays with the wave. And even if we do make a mistake and wipe out, don’t be discouraged. Get back in the water and go again. God is bigger than our mistakes!
