Growing as an Enneagram Six: The Guardian

DAY 1 OF 5

Your Loyalty Reflects God

Loyalty is a defining trait of Enneagram Sixes, and no doubt this has shaped your life in one way or another. But what does loyalty really mean? I would like to suggest that loyalty is something better felt than articulated; we either feel it or we don’t. We either trust that someone is there for us, has our back, and feels the same toward us…or we don’t. Loyalty often comes with years of friendship, but for some, loyalty is a blood tie. At other times, your loyalties are influenced by where you were born or your heritage.

Having firm and constant support for others means that you are not someone who is easily discouraged or shaken. You stand by those you love through the good times and bad, through triumph or failure, through scandal or greatness. It takes a lot of character to be this type of person.

God’s loyalty is displayed all throughout Scripture—from the garden of Eden, the exodus, seeing His people through captivity in Babylon, sending Jesus, and sustaining the start of His church. From the very start, God’s creation has failed Him, walked away from Him, and sinned against Him. He could have destroyed Adam and Eve right then and started over. But no. He had a plan to redeem and restore us to Himself.

In the verse from Isaiah, God points out that it is against nature for a mother to forget her child, but because of sin, it happens. Some mothers choose drugs, alcohol, a free lifestyle, or even men over their children, and this is sin. But God will never forget you. It’s against His very nature; if God ceased His love and loyalty toward you, He would cease to be God. His loyalty toward you is unshakable and written in stone.

We may forget God, walk away from Him, or spit in His face, but He will never turn His back on us. That’s loyalty.

We are all tempted to filter our thoughts and feelings about God through our own experience. If you had parents who sinned against you, it may be hard to imagine that God could never do so. This is why we need to go back to God’s Word over and over again to weigh our thoughts and feelings about God against what He says.

About this Plan

Growing as an Enneagram Six: The Guardian

The Enneagram is an ancient personality typology. The theory behind it is that a person assumes one of nine personalities in childhood as a reaction to discovering the world as a scary, unkind place, and thus is unlikely to accept their true self. This devotional is designed for Enneagram Sixes, also known as the Guardian.
