The Heart Attitudes: Part 4

DAY 5 OF 5

Heart Attitude #3 – Give and Receive Scriptural Correction

Proverbs 15:10, “Discipline is harsh for the one who leaves the path; the one who hates correction will die."

Proverbs 15:12, “A mocker doesn’t love one who corrects him; he will not consult the wise.”

How open are you to giving and receiving scriptural correction? I hope after this week you are more open than before because you can see the value in following what the scriptures teach us.

You may not think you are worthy to give someone else correction. Maybe, you think someone more mature or who has a position of authority should be the one to dole out correction to your friends. You might even be thinking, I would take correction from a famous believer, but I do not know if I would trust my friends to give me correction. The truth is that God uses the lowly as much, if not more, than the famous. Do not let your pride keep you from hearing the truth regardless of the source. If God could use Balaam’s donkey to deliver a message, he can use you, me or anyone of your friends too!

I would like to quote Bullock to conclude this week. He writes “As faithful friends we speak up when needed and, out of love, take the risk to help others by correcting them. Our future depends on how we respond to valid correction. If we are proud, angry, and resentful, we will run into a grim future (Proverbs 14:12; 29:1). If we are grateful and try to understand what we have done wrong and turn from it, we will increasingly understand how life works and be blessed by that understanding.”

Dag 4

About this Plan

The Heart Attitudes: Part 4

In this 5 day plan we will look at the third Heart Attitude: Give and Receive Scriptural Correction. We will look at how to do that well. We will see how to give correction effectively and receive it graciously. We will see the value in doing so and discover how God wants to impart wisdom to us through other believers.
