Light and DarknessSýnishorn
Jesus is present in the church
Over the past two days, we read how God’s presence in the temple was symbolized by a golden lampstand, and how on the new earth Jesus is “the lamp” replacing all other sources of light. Today’s text passage describes another vision of the apostle John. He sees Jesus Christ in his godly glory, surrounded by seven golden lampstands.
In verse 20, Jesus Himself explains to John what these lampstands mean: they are the seven churches.
The churches are spreading God’s light in the world around them. This is exactly what Jesus told his disciples: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
If you are a Christian, Jesus Christ dwells in you. His presence in you shines like a lamp in the darkness. May your life contribute to God’s glory!

About this Plan
Immediately in the first chapter of the Bible, we read how God created light. And further on in the Bible, light is often used as a metaphor for God’s domain as opposed to the domain of sin and death. Jesus even calls Himself “the Light of the world”. Light and darkness thus have an important place in the Bible. This reading plan presents a selection of verses about this topic.
