Love God Greatly: Everlasting Covenant

DAY 10 OF 28

The idea of a Sabbath is seen from the very beginning of time. For six days the Lord created and then He rested on the seventh day. He made the practice of Sabbath part of the law on Mount Sinai. God told Moses to talk to the people about the importance of keeping the Sabbath. By the time Jesus came, the religious leaders had created a ton of hard rules for the Sabbath that was not what God originally said. Jesus reminded His disciples that while the Sabbath is not obsolete, it should not be a burden since it was designed for our benefit.

In keeping a day of rest in our week we emulate God and give our bodies and minds a day to rest so we can get back to doing what God called us to do. This covenant points us to a day when we will enter an eternal Sabbath rest. Sabbath will have no end. We will have rest from evil and sin, rest from worry and care, rest from hardship and sorrow. We will find eternal rest when we dwell with God in His city and it will be glorious.

Lord, You made us and You know how we function best. Our bodies and minds need rest, so You gave us the Sabbath. Help us to love it as we keep a Sabbath day to focus on You, be with our families, and rest our bodies so we can continue in the good works You have called us to do. Help us also remember that our little Sabbath days here on earth point to a much grander Sabbath that we will get to experience one day when we see You face to face.
