EDOM AND HIS FAULT
Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honor is humility.
(Proverbs 18:12)
Who is Edom? Edom is a nation from Esau's descendants. In the story of Esau and Jacob, we read how Esau, the firstborn, underestimated the birthright that he received from the Lord. Esau exchanged his birthright for a bowl of red beans. Because of his anger towards his brother, Jacob, Esau opposed his parents by marrying Canaanite women who were idol worshippers. The Bible tells us that darkness and light cannot be united, therefore, we should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.
Edom built cities in high places and thought they would be safe from the attacks of other nations. They thought that their country was a strong, prosperous, and famous nation. They refused to know the true God and chose to believe in foreign gods and magic. Edom's pride had reached God, and as a result, God sent His servant, Obadiah, to warn them.
Hearing Obadiah's warning against Edom did not make the people tremble. On the contrary, they looked down on Obadiah and even became more proud of their gods and magic.
Pride happens when we put our own ideas above the truths of God and His ways.
Proud people are those who don't know the true God.
