When push comes to shove and when all has been said and done, what is it that you live for? The answer to this question says a lot about you. The answer says a lot about what you’re all about. It tells people what you truly treasure. It tells people what is truly valuable to you. It is important, then, to ask where your treasure is.
On the one hand, the Bible says that we should not lay up treasures on earth (Matthew 6:19). What does this mean? It means that we should not live for the things of the earth. It does not mean that we should not acquire things. It means that we should not live to acquire things. It means that we should not treasure the things of the earth. Although we need them and must acquire them, we should not center our lives on the acquisition of them.
On the other hand, the Bible says that we should lay up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:20). What does this mean? It means that we should live in such a way that the Lord stores up rewards for us in heaven. It does not mean that we should ignore the earth or the things of the earth, as if that were possible. It means that we should live to please the Lord in everything we do on earth. It means that we should live to lay up the treasures of heaven. Although we do not need them now and can’t access them now, we should center our lives on the acquisition of them.
What you treasure identifies where your heart is located. The heart or soul is the focal point of human existence. It is the source of everything we do in life. It is the source from which “flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23). If your heart is governed by the Holy Spirit, you will lay up treasures in heaven. If your heart is governed by Satan, you will store up treasures on earth. It is very telling and very important, therefore, to ascertain where your treasure is.
Today, have an honest discussion with yourself. Ask yourself: What do I truly treasure?
