(Un)Qualified to Do God's CallingSýnishorn
Calling the Unqualified
"I can't do this! God, seriously, there's got to be a better person for the job than me!" Are these your words or thoughts when God calls on you? I was called upon to lead a Bible study group many years ago. My first thought was, "Me? Why me? I'm not qualified for that." It was a terrifying thought, as I was just beginning my spiritual journey. How could I possibly lead a group of women in a Bible study? Even though the Bible study leaders assured me that God would provide me with whatever I needed to lead the group, my unsure self replied, "Thanks, but no thanks." I felt unqualified. If you feel unqualified for what God is calling you to do, join the club.
I thought I needed a perfect "Bible resume" or a Ph.D. in theology to do what God had called me to do. As is often the case, God calls on us to serve Him irrespective of our shortcomings, be they imagined or actual. We might feel as though we lack the courage, wisdom, education, strength, experience, or knowledge to be used by God. But that's the farthest thing from the truth. I needed to trust in the Lord and not on my own understanding and rely on His provision and guidance to do what He was calling me to do.
For God, there is no such thing as unqualified. What opportunities to serve and honor God have you passed by? What is God calling you to do today? Take time to pray about it and ask God where He wants you to serve Him. Perhaps it's welcoming people in your church as they come in and help them find a seat. Maybe it's volunteering at a food bank. Perhaps it's going on a mission trip or even leading a Bible study class. Am I bothered that I didn't follow God's calling back then? Of course! But the good news is that God doesn't just give you one chance to obey His call to fulfill His purposes. He gives you many opportunities!
