Fasting for Faith & Health
In all of my years of being a Christ follower, one of the most challenging but rewarding moments to begin a year are during times of fasting. It’s difficult because our human nature craves and needs sustenance each day to live, but is also satisfying since the hunger pangs you feel help develop a closeness and dependency on our Heavenly Father.
There are a few important details to note once you have decided to fast. First, know that fasting is only between you and God. Jesus tells us in Matthew that when you fast, first anoint your head and wash your face, then refrain from telling anyone else. Next, determine the type of fasting you are going to do. You may partake in what is known as a “Daniel Fast”, which is typically twenty-one days and often consists of vegetables and water. Another fast often only consists of drinking water with no food at all. This is the sort Jesus did while in the wilderness. Lastly, believe that God can answer your difficult prayers when you fast. In Mark, Jesus’ disciples wondered why they could not cast out an unclean spirit, and Jesus replied that only could be done through prayer and fasting. Trust God that you will see His goodness while you fast.
