The Revelation of Jesus Christ 2Sýnishorn
Jesus’ Fourfold Name
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True (Revelation 19:11a).
Seven long centuries before the first coming of Christ, the Jewish prophet Isaiah was moved to call out in prayer,
“Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence—as when fire kindles brushwood. And the fire causes water to boil—to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence!” (Isaiah 64:1–2).
This passionate prayer for God to open the heavens and come to Earth in triumph and glory will be answered in Revelation, which says, “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True” (Revelation 19:11a). This event is the Second Coming of Christ. It is not just the climactic event of the book of Revelation, but the climactic event of the entire Bible and all of human history.
When the prophet Isaiah prayed, he prayed that the Lord would rend the heavens and come down, and that He would make His name known. That is exactly what will happen. Jesus Christ will tear the heavens open and come to this planet, revealing His name and glory to all the earth. His fourfold name reveals His glory:
1. Faithful and True: Jesus is faithful to all of His promises. He is true in all He says. His name is a name we can trust.
2. An Unknown Name: His is a name of mystery, which reflects the fact that we cannot fully understand our great God. He is so far above and beyond us.
3. The Word of God: This is a name of power, for God’s Word is powerful. He created the galaxies with His mere word. Jesus Christ has the power to create life and to execute judgment.
4. King of kings and Lord of lords: This is a name of majesty. Jesus is none other than God, the sovereign and majestic God. All greatness, power, authority, and glory belong to Jesus Christ.
When Jesus returns, He will reveal His name, and every knee will bow. Come, Lord Jesus.
