… Your rod and staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4c)
Hope in the shadow of death
King David is the author of a majority of the Psalms, through which he so aptly expresses his deep understanding of and confidence in God Almighty. Growing up as a shepherd boy, David was familiar with many near-death experiences from lions and bears (1 Samuel 17:34-37) and the vicious schemes and attacks of King Saul (see 1 Samuel 18:10-11 & 17-19; 19:8-18). In all of those situations, God delivered David from untimely deaths. As the world faces the challenge of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, we can draw spiritual strength and confidence from David’s encounter with Goliath, told in 1 Samuel 17.
- Read vs. 1-11. The Philistines (Israel’s enemy) were already encamped on Israel’s territory and—through the words of Goliath—threatened to enslave the whole nation. How does this situation compare with the present threat of the COVID-19 and its impact?
- Read vs. 12-30. While King Saul and all his soldiers felt completely powerless against Goliath, David was sent by his father to take some supplies for his brothers and their commander. What does this teach us about God’s ways and timing? Is there something your family can do for those who are battling this pandemic?
- In vs. 31-47, David testifies of God’s deliverance and faithfulness in protecting those that trust Him. How does this challenge you with regards to your confidence in God in the face of the current pandemic and its aftermath?
- Read vs. 48-54. David proves that confidence in God brings victory and deliverance. Compare and contrast the actions of David with those of Saul’s soldiers in their encounters with Goliath. How does David challenge you as a believer?
Family activity - You will need to collect suitable household items.
Organise an obstacle course using items like clothes and chairs from your house. Blindfold one family member and direct them through the course by giving them instructions using words like: ‘straight on,’ ‘turn left,’ ‘turn right,’ ‘crawl under’ to guide them through the maze.
We might not know where we are going but God knows our way! The gentle Shepherd comforts us with His rod and His staff.
