Josh Wilson - That Was Then, This Is Now

DAY 5 OF 7

House Divided

If you’re anything like me, you sometimes do things that you simply don’t intend to do. Many times, my intentions are to serve and please God, yet I find myself returning to old sins and habits. I think to myself, “I’m a Christian. I shouldn’t still be struggling with this sin.” But the truth is, even though we as Christians have placed our faith in Jesus and we’ve been forgiven, we’re still not perfect. We won’t be complete until the day we finally see Jesus face to face.

Paul struggled with this same thing. In Romans 7, he says, "For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” He goes on to say, "For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” He’s so frustrated and torn by his dual nature that he cries, “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?"

Seems a bit discouraging, until we come to the very next verse. Thank you, Lord, for this verse! Romans 7:25 says, "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” There’s our answer. Jesus will save us from ourselves.

My song, “House Divided,” says, “I am a house divided, but I’ve decided I’m going to fight it. I do what I don’t want to, oh, God, I need you to make me new every day.”

Today and everyday, as you fight against your old self, rely on the peace, power, and forgiveness that is offered to you through the Holy Spirit. Christ has conquered death itself. May we allow him to conquer our sin nature.
