DAY 6 OF 7

Regret

Have you ever done something that looking back you thought:

How could I have lowered myself to that standard?
How could I have acted that way?
How could I not have seen the long range result of my actions?

Regret leaves a wound that badgers our integrity. It questions our discernment where we’re left to pick up the pieces. It’s painful because we can’t fix it, change it, or reverse it. And what’s the worst part? WE did it! Yikes! Yet, God provides a way to inner healing.

Exercise submission.Talk to the Father, Lord, this is bigger than me. The consequences are too grave for me to repair. I’m suffering, but I refuse to carry the burden any longer. I entrust this into your care to work it together for good.

Exercise expectancy. We have not because we expect not. It’s impossible to believe God when we’re buried in remorse. But expectation is a choice. God proclaims, “I work ALL things together for good.” (Romans 8:28) Our regret is in that “All” word. When we submit to the Father, our pain becomes His possibility.

Exercise thankfulness. Are you serious? Thank God for this horrible feeling? How can I thank the Father when I’m beating myself up? God never said to “feel” thankful; rather to “offer” it as an act of obedience. It’s to our benefit when we employ an attitude of grateful compliance.

What regret abides in your spirit? How might it be used as a fingernail file in your spiritual growth?

Beloved single mom, you’re stuck in the muck of regret. Yet, I never waste one sorrow or sense of loss. I am turning your mourning into joy and your regret into a jewel of redeeming value. You are not alone. I love you. – Jesus
