Jesus - Your Fullness and Fulfiller
I Always Choose My Dad
As a parent, one of the things that I’ve enjoyed is how my children express their love to me. When my son was in 6th grade, he won a poetry competition with his poem “I Always Choose My Dad.” As a prize for winning, the school had his poem engraved on a plaque and gave it to him. He then gave it to me. I have it in my office even now - many, many years later.
I like to play catch.
When my partner is a choice,
I always choose my Dad.
When I can’t sleep,
I choose to think of pleasant things,
I always choose my Dad.
If I can’t find the answer,
Or I need some advice,
I always choose my Dad.
Dads are almost always right,
I don’t know how they do it!
But, I know I always choose my Dad,
Because dads are not fads,
They are everlasting.
I cannot begin to tell you how much this poem means to me—not for the corny prose, but for the sentiment. It’s about choices my son makes toward me because of his love for me. As his dad, I am pleased!
The Apostle Paul writes about how we can please our heavenly Father. “We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding...in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way...” Colossians 1:9-10
Paul goes on to say what pleases the Lord:
“...bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father.” Colossians 1:10-12
You could restate it for yourself like this:
- Because I love God, I want to please Him by doing the good works He wants me to do.
- I know what God wants me to do by getting to Him through His Word.
- I please God when I allow Him to strengthen me and give me power.
- I please God when I thank Him for what He has done and is doing in my life.
When you love someone, you want to please them. If you want to please God, focus on the love relationship you have with him. Let him fill you and then flow through you to others.

About this Plan
The "Pure Jesus" plan is a collection of reflections on Jesus as our freedom and forgiver (justification), our fullness and fulfiller (sanctification) and our friend and family (community on mission). The deeper we experience his transformation, the more our lives will reflect a pure image of our Savior.
