Sanctification is God’s act of making His people holy, unique and set apart through the blood of Christ.
One of the most repeated Old Testament refrains can be found at the heart of God’s desire to redeem His people from Egypt as He spoke to them saying,
“I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people” (Leviticus 26:12, Exodus 6:7; Deuteronomy 28:9; Jeremiah 7:23).
God graciously set apart the people of Israel as the unique nation that would be His people, those for whom He would set up His dwelling place. Because God is a holy and righteous God, to worship Him and dwell with Him meant that His people must also be holy, living distinct lives set apart from the peoples of other nations:
“You are to be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine” (Leviticus 20:26).
As the apostle Peter explained it, we are to be
“Obedient children…not to be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (1Peter 1:14-16).
Have you consecrated all of your life to be used of God? Is every part of your life opened up to God’s sanctifying work through His Holy Spirit?
