Is There Good Debt In Business ?

DAY 2 OF 3

Day 2: Trust God not Debt

If you trust borrowed money over trusting God, then you will always be a slave to this world system. In 2 Chronicles, Asa King of Judah failed this same test of trusting God. When a great army came up against Judah, instead of seeking God for help, he sought help from the kingdom of Syria. Because King Asa didn’t trust God to deliver him, God told him that Judah would never overcome the kingdom of Syria.

If you go through the Old Testament, you will see that Judah and Syria were at war many times and many times Syria would overcome Judah. The story of King Asa teaches us that who we turn to first for help is whom we are subject to. I would rather be subjected to God, than to the world’s system.

Besides being a slave to the lender, borrowed money amplifies mistakes you make in business.  And we all will make some mistakes. For example, a few years ago, I started an online service for expecting parents. To market this new service, I spent over $4,000 to advertise in a local parenting magazine.  After a few months, it was clear that this advertising source was not working for us.

This was a $4,000 mistake because I didn't understand the correct way to market my business. However, this would have been a more costly mistake if I had borrowed money for this business expense. I could potentially be still paying for that mistake today.

This example highlights what God tells us in Proverbs. He expresses his heart for our prosperity by saying that his blessing makes us rich without bringing us any sorrows. Business debt creates sorrows. Many mighty corporations have closed their doors because of the sorrows of business debt. Let's trust God, not debt.

In our conclusion tomorrow, we will examine some alternatives to business debt.
