Translation

Translated by Joseph Onasakenrat (1845-1880), an Iroquois Mohawk chief, during his training for the ministry of the Methodist Church of Canada. He had been originally a Roman Catholic, and, while being prepared for the priesthood at a seminary at Montreal, had made a translation of the Liturgical Epistles and Gospels according the the Roman use. This version of the Gospels was examined before publication by two educated Indians, Jean Dion and P. Laforte.

First published the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1880. This historical text is maintained by the British and Foreign Bible Society.

With title page in English facing the Iroquois: The Holy Gospels, translated from the Authorized English version into the Iroquois Indian dialect, under the supervision of the Montreal Auxiliary to the British and Foreign Bible Society.
