Tidak lama kemudian ada lagi yang memandang Petrus serta berkata, “Engkau pasti seorang dari mereka!” Petrus menjawab, “Bukan!” Kira-kira satu jam kemudian ada seorang lagi yang dengan tegas menyatakan, “Saya tahu orang ini juga murid Yesus, karena keduanya berasal dari Galilea.” Tetapi Petrus berkata, “Saudara, saya tidak tahu apa yang Saudara katakan.” Sedang ia mengucapkan kata-kata itu, ayam pun berkokoklah. Pada saat itu juga Yesus menoleh dan memandang Petrus. Maka teringatlah Petrus akan kata-kata Yesus: “Sebelum ayam berkokok besok pagi, engkau akan menyangkal Aku tiga kali.” Petrus keluar dari halaman itu sambil menangis dengan sedihnya.
