PADA waktu itu Kaisar Agustus, yaitu Kaisar Romawi, mengeluarkan maklumat supaya diadakan sensus di seluruh daerah kekuasaannya. Sensus itu diadakan ketika Kirenius menjadi gubernur Siria. Semua orang diwajibkan kembali ke daerah nenek moyangnya untuk mendaftarkan diri. Karena Yusuf keturunan Raja Daud, ia harus pergi ke Betlehem di Yudea, kota kediaman Raja Daud dahulu. Dari Nazaret di Galilea ia berjalan ke sana. Maria, tunangannya, yang waktu itu sedang hamil, dibawanya serta. Ketika mereka berada di sana, tibalah saatnya bagi Maria untuk bersalin. Ia melahirkan anaknya yang pertama, seorang anak laki-laki. Anak itu dibungkusnya dengan selimut, lalu diletakkan di dalam palungan karena di penginapan tidak ada tempat. Malam itu beberapa orang gembala sedang menjaga domba-domba di padang. Tiba-tiba muncul seorang malaikat di tengah-tengah mereka dan pemandangan di sekitarnya menjadi terang benderang karena kemuliaan Tuhan. Mereka sangat ketakutan, tetapi malaikat itu menenangkan mereka. “Jangan takut!” katanya. “Aku membawa berita kesukaan yang belum pernah dikabarkan. Berita ini untuk semua orang. Juru Selamat, yaitu Mesias, Tuhan, malam ini telah lahir di Betlehem!

Our Christmas story starts with the angel’s annunciation to Mary and concludes with the visit of the Magi. In these reflections and applications of the Christmas narrative I will mostly refer to Luke, as his is the fullest of the gospel accounts.
