Our understanding of God’s truth starts on an elementary level and grows as we keep our hearts soft and attentive to him. As we faithfully seek him and his truth, he reveals more of his truth to us. That’s the dynamic between Jesus and the crowds to whom he preached. His parables—“the secrets of the kingdom of heaven”—are unveiled to those whose hearts are open. The key variable in understanding spiritual truth is not intellect; it’s faith and desire. Skeptics tend to read God’s Word and grow more skeptical, while those who hunger for truth grow in understanding. No matter how much we struggle to grasp spiritual insights, when we seek God, he can help us gain the insight we desire.
