Remember, You Are Righteous

Sometimes, I think as Christians, we lose battles because we forget who we are in Christ. But the glorious truth of the Bible is, if we have been born again, we are declared righteous!

Think of it as three transfers from three bank accounts: Adam’s bank, your bank, and Jesus’ bank. Adam’s bank account is full of debt. When he disobeyed God, mankind was cursed, hopelessly in debt to the living God for their disobedience and unable to escape death, the results of this debt.

The first transfer is a hopeless debt—our bankrupt ancestor, Adam, transfers his debt into our account. We are all born into spiritual debt and stained by sin, just like Adam. But when Jesus died on the cross, He took the sins of the world in His body and endured the wrath of God as a punishment for our sins.

That’s the second transfer: our debt was accredited into Christ’s account, and He paid for it in full. So the worst of us is imputed onto Jesus Christ. But here’s the crazy part: the best of Jesus Christ is accredited into our account!

That’s the third transfer—sometimes called the great exchange. Christ takes the judgment of God for our sins and clothes us in His righteousness. So, any repentant sinner who asks Jesus to save them isn’t seen as an impure, lustful, lying, wretched sinner anymore but is clothed in the beauties of Christ.

That’s why it’s called the “gospel”—because it’s good news!
