The day is coming when you and your family will stand face to face with God.

Depending on where your relationship with God stands, that’s either an unbelievably terrifying or unimaginably wonderful thought. If we could only take stock of how we would feel at that moment—what we would find important, what we would regret, what we would be grateful to have pursued—our lives would be changed forever.

We often start with our own dreams for our families and then build our marriages from there. What if we started with a vision of the end and worked backwards, building the kind of marriage that will prepare us to stand before God? As distant as that day may seem, this encounter with God is a certainty—it is more real than any ideal for marriage you could come up with on your own.

The Bible calls our attention to this encounter with God often. One way that the Bible does this is by speaking of the rewards available to us in heaven. While some Christians are uncomfortable with the concept of seeking rewards, Jesus actually commanded us to pursue them. What if your marriage was more focused on seeking God’s kingdom and the rewards He offers than on your own happiness?

Discuss with your spouse: What would it look like to pursue God’s kingdom in your marriage, to be motivated by the rewards God offers rather than your own ideals of success?
