Foundational Practices

Yesterday, we talked about the importance of having the right motives when it comes to following Jesus. The ultimate goal is to know Him better. When we pursue these practices with this motivation in mind, they change the way we live.

While there are many spiritual practices—too many to talk about in this Plan—there are a few that are essential for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been following Jesus.

Today, we’re going to look at the spiritual practices of reading the Bible and prayer. Sometimes, these two practices are looked at individually, but instead, we’re going to look at them together.

When we read the Bible, we’re able to learn more about the character and the nature of God. We see how He’s cared for His people, stood up against injustice, loved the overlooked, and so much more.

2 Timothy 3:16 NIV says:

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

In order for us to be taught, rebuked, corrected, and trained by Scripture, we need to connect with God through prayer. Prayer can seem like an intimidating practice, but think of it as having a conversation with God. It doesn’t need to be scripted or formal. Instead, think about a close friend. How do you talk to that person? Try and talk to God in that same way.

If you’re still not sure how to start, consider asking God questions after you’ve read a portion of Scripture. If it’s confusing, ask Him to help you understand. If it’s encouraging, tell Him that. Use Scripture as a tool to guide your conversation with God, and then watch how your relationship with Him grows.

Challenge: Read today’s Scriptures, and then choose one to talk to God about. Tell Him anything that stood out to you, and then ask Him to help you find one way to apply it to your life today.
