Real Hope: The God ConnectionMinta
Hole-Filler
Have you ever seen a picture of an orphaned animal who’s been adopted by a totally different species? It happens and on one level is great, but there’s something so wrong about it! There’s something in us and in animals that’s desperate to fill the ‘holes’ in our lives.
As we read Exodus 32 to 33:6, we see people who God repeatedly calls ‘stiff-necked’. They are stubborn and foolish. They know Yahweh is their God. They have seen Him work miraculously, and yet, as soon as there is a seeming silence – a hole – they fill it with what they’ve seen others do.
But Israel is NOT others! They have a God and He is rightly angry when they melt gold jewelry and fashion a calf – an empty, lifeless, hole-filler – to worship. This idol has not and will not ever do anything to love them and is man-made! It’s not worthy of their praise and honour and yet the Israelites freely give their honour to the calf-shaped hole-filler.
Our God is mighty, loving, good, and holy. He alone is deserving of our honour and glory! And when in the seeming silence we fill His place with anything else, we dishonour Him. Let’s pray that God would help us live in dependence and adoration of Him above anything else!

Connection. We are created for connection. From the first breath in the darkness at the beginning of time through to today, God has always desired to be connected to His people. To live with us. However, sin destroyed this plan. Through these readings in Exodus, we see the lengths God is willing to go to remain connected to His people despite our sin and constant rejection.
