I'm Not Good Enough

Ireland’s Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship by dominating at 15 under and six shots better than the second-place winner. This was a huge performance considering he missed the cut four straight times.

Even so, he met with coach Neil Manchip to overcome doubt before the tournament, and an article on ESPN.com said, “The coach told Lowry he didn’t need to carry the weight of the world, or of the Republic of Ireland, into the event. ‘Don’t try to force anything. It doesn’t need to be perfect,’ Manchip told Lowry.”

Those words obviously resonated with Lowry, as he remained confident in holding off the competition and didn’t allow the rough weather to rattle him. After the win, however, Lowry admitted, “I suppose I didn’t even know this morning if I was good enough to win a major.”

Despite a 4-shot lead heading into the final day, Lowry still wasn’t sure he was good enough. Although we can’t imagine playing golf at his level, most of us can probably relate to a similar sentiment in our own lives.

We battle with the concept of being “good enough” at our jobs, in our relationships, and in other pursuits. Oftentimes we’re filled with doubt and dwell on our weaknesses, but in these moments we can’t give up.

The reality is, we’ll never be good enough or strong enough in our own power, yet with the proper view of this truth, it’s actually great news! We should be relieved to know we’re not good enough and never will be.

The challenge becomes for us to accept our limitations, seek humility, and allow our weaknesses to give Jesus the opportunity to move.

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Today, let’s humbly acknowledge we’re not good enough on our own, but through the power of Christ, we have victory over sin and death and can overcome any situation.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be more than enough for me. I praise You for the incredible power living within me…and that when I am weak, You are strong. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
