Your City Needs Sisterhood
“The whole city celebrates when the godly succeed” (Proverbs 11:10).
Sisterhood brings fulfillment and joy for both sisters. But it also brings joy to the city. When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices. In Jeremiah 29:7, God tells the Israelites to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile.” Peter tells us that just as the Israelites were political exiles in Babylon, we are spiritual exiles in this world. If the Israelites were to seek blessing for the cities they settled in, how much more does God want us to seek the good of our hometowns? When we invest in younger sisters, the city—including us—will prosper.
Julie was a second-year law student whose world was shattered when a man walked out on her. A friend suggested finding an older sister to guide her through the maze of life, and she sought me out. As I shared about the love of God from which nothing can separate us (Romans 8:38), Julie opened her heart to God, and the feelings of being torn apart lost their hold on her. Julie is now on the front line of litigating human rights cases across the country. She started her own law firm, which strategically seeks to empower younger women to participate in decision-making in the city's public and private sectors. As an older sister, she mentors younger sisters called to leadership positions as they seek the peace and prosperity of the city.
Sisterhood can be the secret to a meaningful life, not only for younger sisters but for you and your city too! Peter says that when we live properly among our unbelieving neighbors, they will give honor to God (1 Peter 2:12). God will work through you and your sisters to impact a generation, one person and one step at a time.
