What Will They Think If I’m a Leader?
I think we, as women, are often scared to stand up confidently in a conversation, at a job, in our families, and in the kingdom of God. We think we aren’t qualified or given authority to step up and speak the truth.
It is easy for us to believe the lies: I’m not capable of handling this right. I don’t have the perfect words, so maybe I shouldn’t say anything. It is better for me to be quiet and stay liked.
I used to believe those lies. I didn’t think I was good enough to do what God called me to do.
Then I met Deborah.
Deborah is a woman in the Old Testament who continually surprises me. Deborah was a prophet and a judge in Israel, and everyone listened to her.
Deborah’s name in Hebrew meant “bee.” A bee can have sweet honey but a strong sting, and this was a characteristic of Deborah’s leadership. Even though Deborah was faithful and kind, she was also fierce and not afraid to stand up for others or herself.
God used Deborah to remind us that women are capable and fierce. We are not objects to be enjoyed or products to be reviewed by men. We are warriors, capable of being obedient to God, leading others, and winning the battles we face. Our purpose is not to sit and smile as others overlook us but to lead others to God’s obedience.
Maybe God is calling you to talk about Jesus with a friend, start a website, or be honest with your boss. Whatever it is, listen for God’s call and obey. It’s often easier to point to someone else and say, “You got this one.” But that is the beautiful part about God’s story. He wants women to rise up like Deborah and be a part of His plan. We may not always be liked, but when we are obedient and follow God’s will, we are purposeful and bold.
What is God calling you to do? Stop listening to the lies from the doubters, and focus on listening to your God. May we all be like Deborah, sweet like honey but strong in our fight.
Lord, please show me what You are calling me to do. I want to be obedient, as Deborah was. Help me to rise up and follow Your will. Amen.

"What will they think?" is a question that often stops women from doing what we feel called to do. But as we look at the women in the Bible, we see they weren’t picture-perfect “cool girls”; they were regular women who trusted God and chose to follow Him. This devotional shows you that life is about more than being liked. It’s about living for God and boldly walking with Him.
