Global Pan(dem)ic & a Sound Faith (Part 1): A 5-Day Identity Check

JOU 3 SOU 5

How do we discover what is ultimately true about ourselves?

We often hear the encouragement, “Be true to yourself!” This advice to do what is natural proves defective. I don’t think you want me to follow that advice. It would create more turmoil for me and for others because I am naturally depraved.

But how may this deformed self be rescued?

Not on my own. My old self must be replaced by a regenerated new self.

In Christianity, one is “born again” (John 3) through faith in Jesus Christ. This spiritual redemption makes it possible to believe what the Christian’s God says about our new true identity in Him.

The Trinitarian God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—provides the new identity with enduring value. Despite short-term disruptions of roles and responsibilities (as we’ve experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic) or long-term deprivations of routine and relationships (which we may yet experience, if we haven’t already), our identity remains unchanged.

Tomorrow we’ll look at how the triune God does this.
