Many have received Jesus as their Savior, but have not submitted to Him as their Lord. They are still in charge of their house and still hold the keys. Jesus is willing to take full responsibility for those under His Lordship. When Jesus becomes your Savior and Lord, resisting the Devil will be effectual. It will not just be empty words without power.
It is interesting to see how Judas—being a disciple and friend of Jesus—was able to come under demonic possession. When we read the Gospels, we see Judas calling Jesus a teacher, but never his Lord. To Judas, Jesus was a good teacher and a friend, but not his God. You can be very familiar with God, and even call him your friend, however, the Devil does not care about that. The Devil only responds to authority. If you are not under the authority of Jesus, you cannot walk in the authority of Jesus. I am all for being a friend of God, but our friendship with Him should not be a substitute for complete submission to Him as our Lord.
Some people do not want Jesus as their King, and only want Him as a good teacher. In this life, there is no middle ground, we are either God's servants or the Devil’s slaves. Yes, we are God's children, but in our hearts, we must never digress from a place of surrender, to a place of selfishness.
If we truly have Jesus as our Lord, He will guide us and use us for His kingdom. But if we are our own lords, we will use Jesus for our own selfish purposes.
