Eternal Security Egzanp
The Practical Benefits
No one on earth enjoys the blessings of God as much as the man who knows God and is aware of knowing God. He is blessed because he enjoys a life of peace, not paranoia. He knows God is his friend, not his enemy. God isn’t out to get him. He enjoys a life of liberty, not legalism. He doesn’t have to perform in order to gain or maintain God’s favor. He can come boldly before the throne of grace that he may obtain mercy. He knows he’s accepted in the hands of the Beloved. He is confident and not condemned.
But the insecure believer lives a life of constant self-condemnation, never quite sure of his present standing with God. One who doubts his standing with God frequently depends upon his own performance, crawling back to God, promising to do better, making new resolutions he can never keep.
Have you been to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? The bridge stretches 4,200 feet, the longest in the world at the time of its completion. You can imagine how difficult it would be to construct such a bridge. When completed, the tab came to $27 million. During construction of the first half, twenty-three men fell to their deaths. No safety devices were being used. However, in constructing the second half of the bridge, they decided to use the greatest safety net ever made. This net saved the lives of ten men who fell from the bridge during construction; but it also allowed men to work 15-25% faster since they were relaxed after being relieved of the fear of falling. The knowledge that they were safe allowed them to devote all of their energy to the task. No one can do his best work when he’s afraid of what might happen. No doubt God wants us to live a life of good works after we have been saved. If we envision God holding a big hatchet over our heads, ready to cut us off, our good works will be motivated by fear. Serving God out of fear not only keeps one from doing his best, but also robs him of joy. The believer who knows God has a safety net stretched out underneath can serve God freely out of a grateful and loving heart! May God lead you to become one of those who know God and know they know Him. Without such knowledge, the believer walks on eggshells before God. He may find himself living a life of legalism and self-condemnation. With such knowledge, he can enjoy a life of liberty and confidence. If you were to die today, do you know where you would be spending eternity tomorrow?
