Why Have You Forsaken Me?

The statement from the Cross that we look at today is filled with profound meaning that can't be ignored. "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" (see Matthew 27:45-50).

This passionate prayer is the very heart and necessity of the Cross. It is the fulfillment of prophecy from Psalm 22. For the first time in eternity, the Son knew the wrath and the judgment of God. Jesus Christ, who knew no sin, took on the sins of the world in that moment. As much physical pain as Jesus endured, this separation from the Father must have been even more agonizing than the physical torture, yet He suffered it for our sake.

Prayer: Jesus, I cannot imagine what it must have been like to take on the sins of the world. Thank You for taking on my sin as You hung on the Cross. May I never forget the price You paid. Amen.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Why the Cross?

“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (I Corinthians 1:18, NIV). The Cross of Christ is the central event of history, but it has also been a source of controversy and offense. In this stirring devotional series, Michael Youssef inspires our appreciation for the offending, redeeming, and very personal work Christ accomplished on the cross. These messages will ground believers in the basis of their faith while guiding unbelievers to a better understanding of the death of Christ on the cross.
