Divide and Conquer
WITH THE First Marine Division strung out over a single road seventy miles long, the Chinese forces attempted to divide and conquer the Americans. Every effort was made to cut the lines of communication and to isolate individual units. They followed this strategy as a US relief force fought its way north from Koto-ri on November 29, 1950. The nine-hundred-man Task Force Drysdale was trying to reach Hagaru-ri to relieve the beleaguered garrison when the Chinese successfully destroyed one of the vehicles in the middle of the convoy. As the lead elements continued ahead, this effectively isolated the rear elements, enabling the Chinese to focus on these separate units, further cutting them up into small groups which they either overwhelmed or forced to surrender.
Fortunately, this Chinese strategy was ultimately unsuccessful on a larger scale. The small garrison at Hagaru-ri held until reinforcements arrived, enabling the isolated units at Yudam-ni to fight their way into the perimeter. The bulk of the division was then able to break out to the south, collecting the rest of its units along the way to Hungnam. The success of this campaign is attributed to the fighting spirit of the Marines and the brilliance of Gen. O. P. Smith, who, even before the surprise onslaught of two Chinese armies, recognized the vital importance of being able to consolidate his forces.
Unfortunately, Satan often has more success in isolating those he wants to attack. Our separation from the body of Christ is usually not physical, but mental, as we distance ourselves from others. Whether due to the wiliness of the evil one or to our fallen nature as human beings, we seem programmed to turn inward in the face of discouragement or depression. In reality, at such times, we need our brothers and sisters in Christ more than ever. Satan or the world will never divide and conquer as long as we firmly plant ourselves in the body of Christ.
